A gold color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of a raised scarlet arm in armor, gauntleted, and placed through the two holding straps of a round gold shield bearing around the rim the inscription "PRIMUS ARMIGER" in black letters, all in front of and extending over a blue equilateral triangle point up, and from each side of the arm extending below the shield a scarlet lightning flash terminating at the base points of the triangle.
Yellow (gold), blue and red are the colors used for the three major combat arms, the color yellow being that for Armor. The triangle signifies the forceful pyramid of power provided by the tanks, and the flashes connote the effective combat capabilities. The arms in armor bearing the shield aloft refers to the motto which means "The best armor bearer." Additionally, the three points of the triangle, the circular shield, and the raised arm allude to the numerical designation of the Armor Group.
The distinctive unit insignia was approved on 5 March 1970.
